Who owns Sammy’s Pizza Duluth?
About | Sammy’s Pizza & Restaurant – West Duluth, MN Our family tradition began more than 67 years ago with Sam Perrella – or as we like to call him, Grandpa Sam. Sam and Louise Perrella owned a small café on the Iron Range in Keewatin, MN. It was during the early 1950s that Sam would listen to stories from World War II veterans about favorite foods they had discovered while serving in Italy.
One of those favorites was pizza – something few people on the Iron Range knew anything about at the time. Sam decided he wanted to learn more so he traveled to Chicago to visit some pizzerias, and it was there where he picked up the idea for square cut pieces. The Perrellas combined some traditional family recipes with their own special touches to create their own pizzas.
In October 1954, after some encouragement from customers who knew they were on to something big, the Perrellas moved their café to Hibbing, MN and Sammy’s Pizza was born. Over the years, Sam invited family members into the business, and more and more Sammy’s locations opened.
- Today, some 67 years, 14 locations and more than 20 million pizzas later, Sammy’s is now in it’s fourth generation of pizza makers, who all use Sam’s original recipes.
- In 2015, PMQ Pizza Magazine, the pizza industry’s No.1 publication, inducted Sammy’s into its Pizza Hall of Fame — which pays tribute to popular pizzerias in business for 50 years or longer.
In 2018, Sammy’s was also voted ‘Best Pizza in Minnesota’ in Minnesota Monthly Magazine’s, Sammy’s in West Duluth opened in 1956 and is owned and operated by Mike and Pam Jerulle, along with their son Nick. Tony Jerulle and Kelly Jerulle, owners of Sammy’s Pizza locations in, and, are also part owners of the restaurant.
Mike began his pizza-making legacy in 1964 when he first started working at Sammy’s Pizza in Hibbing. Back then, he earned 50¢ an hour cutting cheese and pepperoni by hand. He eventually became the manager of that Sammy’s and 19 years later, he and his wife, Pam, purchased Sammy’s Pizza in West Duluth.
When you visit, our hope is that you’ll realize Sammy’s makes much more than great pizza – we make works of art inspiring traditions with family and friends, as well as in our local community. Thank you for making Sammy’s Pizza a part of your family tradition. : About | Sammy’s Pizza & Restaurant – West Duluth, MN
How old is Sami Ladeki?
Sami Ladeki and his San Diego-based Sammy’s chain is still going strong after 32 years. Here’s the secret to his success The average lifespan of a restaurant in America is only about five years, but Sami Ladeki says there’s a secret to why his San Diego-based Sammy’s Restaurant chain celebrated its 32nd birthday in June.
The 78-year-old La Jolla resident said he has never stopped reinventing the menu for his chain, which started out as a single Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza location in June 1989 and has since expanded to include two different restaurant concepts at 16 locations in California and Nevada, including at two airports and two card rooms.
In August, Ladeki reopened his La Mesa location after a $1 million renovation and expansion, and he also unveiled his newest venue, a 165-seat location at the Seven Mile Casino card room in Chula Vista. To accommodate the needs and tastes of of Seven Mile’s customers, the Chula Vista Sammy’s is open 24 hours a day, has a full bar and it serves several Asian dishes.
- During the pandemic, Ladeki also made updates to all of his Sammy’s locations.
- The pandemic has been hard for so many restaurants, and small businesses alike, but if the pandemic has offered us anything, it has been a chance for owners to revamp our restaurants and bars in look and feel,” he said.
- Ladeki’s restaurants are his passion, so he spends all day, every day, visiting his restaurant locations to regularly taste the food for consistency, meet with management and staff and get feedback from customers.
Recently he made numerous visits to the Chula Vista location just to make sure the overhead lights in its glass-walled, greenhouse-style dining room glowed just right at night. He and his wife also spend six months of each year in Nevada, where he operates four Sammy’s locations, including one in the city’s airport and two with gaming licenses. Sami Ladeki seated in his new greenhouse-style Sammy’s Restaurant & Bar location in Chula Vista. When Ladeki started out, Sammy’s offered a small menu of pastas, salad and wood-fired pizzas, including its enduring No.1 pie, the LaDou’s Barbecue Chicken pizza, created by consulting chef Ed LaDou, who helped launch the gourmet California-style pizza trend in the early 1980s at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in Beverly Hills.
Over the years, Ladeki has constantly tinkered with the Sammy’s menu to accommodate changing regional tastes. Today there are fewer pizzas at Sammy’s and more shareable plates. The La Mesa location at 8555 Fletcher Parkway, which reopened Aug.30, has been expanded by 2,000 square feet. Ladeki used that reopening to introduce his latest Sammy’s menu, which he says is his favorite collection of dishes ever.
It emphasizes more sandwiches, pitas, tacos and fresh fish entrees, as well as a new hummus section, with four different flavors. But some items have stuck around since day one, including the chain’s No.1-selling dish, the balsamic grilled chicken salad. Beef pho, a Vietnamese noodle dish on the menu at the new Sammy’s Restaurant & Bar location in Chula Vista. The new Chula Vista location at 285 Bay Blvd. is the result of Ladeki’s 33-year friendship with fellow La Jollan Rod Stone, and his son Ryan Stone.
- The Stones took over management of Seven Mile in 2017 after its former operator was ousted in a 2015 money-laundering scandal.
- Ladeki opened a 250-seat Sammy’s at the Stones’ card room in the Sacramento-area town of Citrus Heights a few years ago.
- The Chula Vista Sammy’s began offering food service to Seven Mile patrons under an outdoor tent in April.
Its dining room opened last month. Just as Ladeki brought in LaDou for pizza consultation three decades ago, he hired a Japanese chef in Sacramento to create the Asian-inspired items that are only available at the Sammy’s card room locations. They include kung pao chicken, salt and pepper shrimp, roast duck wonton noodle soup, beef pho, grilled short rib and grilled pork chop.
- Because the card room locations are open 24 hours a day, they serve select breakfast items from Ladeki’s other restaurant concept, Toast Gastrobrunch in Carlsbad.
- On weekends, the full Toast menu is offered at the Chula Vista location.

History – Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, responsible for creating the first widely recognized video game, Pong, headed a project in the mid-1970s for Atari to launch the first arcade-oriented, family restaurant with computer-programmed animatronics. At a time when arcades were popular in bowling alleys and bars, Bushnell sought to expose younger audiences to arcade games.
- In 1977, Atari opened the first Chuck E.
- Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre in San Jose, CA.
- The concept was an immediate success, and after leaving Atari in 1978, Bushnell purchased the Pizza Time restaurant, forming a new company, Pizza Time Theatre Inc.
- As Bushnell marketed the franchise, hoping to expand into new markets, the concept attracted high-profile clients such as Robert L.
Brock, known for his extensive portfolio of Holiday Inn hotels. In 1979, Brock signed a multi-million-dollar franchising agreement with Pizza Time Theatre Inc., planning to open as many as 280 Chuck E. Cheese’s locations across 16 states. Shortly thereafter, Brock noticed that companies such as Creative Engineering, Inc.
- CEI) were designing more advanced animatronics, and was concerned that competitors would emerge with better technology.
- Bushnell had reassured Brock at the signing of the franchising agreement that the company’s technology would continue to evolve.
- However, prior to the opening of his first location, Brock decided to void the agreement with Pizza Time and form a partnership with CEI.
The first ShowBiz Pizza Place opened in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 3, 1980. The Brock Hotel Corporation owned 80% of ShowBiz Pizza Place, while the other 20% was owned by CEI, which produced the chain’s animatronics show, The Rock-afire Explosion,

‘We’re trying to absorb as much as we can’: Belmont restaurant owner speaks about coping with inflation BELMONT, N.C. (WBTV) – Like restauranteurs across the country, John Bailey, owner of Sammy’s Neighborhood Pub in Belmont, has been doing his best to run a business as inflation surges across the country.
- Bailey said he has noticed price increases on several items he purchases for his restaurant, but chicken products stand out.
- Anything related to chicken, whether it’s chicken wings because of the Super Bowl right now or just chicken breasts, the price has gone up almost 50 percent on some of those items and it’s been tough to deal with,” explained Bailey in an interview with WBTV Thursday night.
He said chicken wings are a popular item at the restaurant and he expects to sell a lot of them for Super Bowl Weekend. Bailey said he ordered 30 extra cases of wings in preparation for the big weekend. “The phone rings off the hook. We have chicken wings stacked up to go and people are coming in all the way up to kickoff,” said Bailey.
While items like wings are more expensive for Bailey to keep in stock these days, he does not plan on continuing to raise the prices on his menu. “Everything is going up in price and we’re trying to absorb as much as we can. We want to take care of our customers. We want them coming in to see us as often as possible, and quite frankly I hate having a price increase every two weeks just because it’s something that seems to spike,” explained the restaurant owner.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual rate of U.S. inflation is rising at its fastest rate in 40 years. For example, federal data shows food prices are up 7.4 percent over last year, gasoline prices are up 40 percent, and used car and truck prices are up more than 40 percent.
Bill Dendy, a Texas-based attorney, and certified public accountant, spoke to WBTV about inflation for the most recent episode of WBTV’s Good Question podcast. He said it’s unclear when the inflation surge will slow down. “Many companies were bearing the weight of the higher costs and now they’re feeling comfortable to pass it on to the consumer, so the consumer will see probably another month or two of increases and thereafter it’s anybody’s guess as to where we end up,” said Dendy.

What is the oldest animatronic?
Modern attractions – The first animatronics characters shown to the public were a dog and a horse, as separate attractions at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Sparko, The Robot Dog (the “pet” of Elektro the Robot) is considered the first modern-day animatronic character, as it represented a living animal rather than a purely mechanical figure.
An unnamed animatronic horse, which was reported to gallop realistically, was also exhibited. Laffing Sal was one of several automated characters used to attract carnival and amusement park patrons to funhouses and dark rides throughout the United States. Its movements were accompanied by a raucous recorded laugh that sometimes frightened small children and annoyed adults.
Walt Disney is often credited for popularizing animatronics for entertainment after he bought an animatronic bird while vacationing (in either New Orleans or Europe ). Disney’s vision for Audio-Animatronics was primarily focused on patriotic displays rather than amusements.
In 1951, two years after Disney developed animatronics, he commissioned machinist Roger Broggie and sculptor Wathel Rogers to lead a team tasked with creating a 9″ figure that could talk and recreate dance routines performed by actor Buddy Ebsen. The figure, dubbed Project Little Man, was never finished.
A year later, Walt Disney Imagineering was created. Disney used what appeared as an animatronic bird in his film Mary Poppins (1964), which was actually controlled by bicycle cables. After Project Little Man, the Imagineering team’s first project was a “Chinese head” which was on display in the lobby of their office.
Customers could ask the head questions and it replied with words of wisdom. The eyes blinked and its mouth opened and closed. Walt Disney Productions started using animatronics in 1955 for Disneyland ‘s Jungle Cruise ride, then for its Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room attraction, which featured animatronic tropical birds and other characters.
The first fully audio-animatronic human figure was that of Abraham Lincoln, created by Disney for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, In 1965, Disney upgraded the figure, dubbed the Lincoln Mark II, to appear at the Opera House at Disneyland Resort in California.
- For three months, while the original Lincoln performed in New York, the Lincoln Mark II gave five performances per hour at Disneyland.
- Actor Royal Dano voiced both versions of the figure.
- Lucky the Dinosaur is the first free-roving Audio-Animatronic figure created by Disney’s Imagineers.
- An approximately 8-foot-tall (2.4 m) green Segnosaurus figure, it pulls a flower-covered cart and is led by Chandler the Dinosaur Handler.
The flower cart Lucky pulls conceals its computer and power source. The Muppet Mobile Lab is a free-roving Audio-Animatronic unit designed by Walt Disney Imagineering. Two Muppet characters, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker, pilot their “laboratory” vehicle through the park, interacting with guests and deploying special effects such as foggers, flashing lights, moving signs, confetti cannons and spray jets.
What restaurant was the first in FNAF?
History – According to Phone Guy in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the original restaurant was named “Fredbear’s Family Diner,” presumably a local family restaurant, before being bought and re-enfranchised as “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.” By the time the events of the second game occurred, the original restaurant and owner have been gone for years.
According to several altered posters in the first game, an incident occurred when a man, dressed in an animatronic (thought to be Golden Freddy ‘s or Springtrap ‘s) suit, lured two and eventually five kids in total into the back of the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza seen in the second game; however, nowhere does it say that he actually murdered them.
The suspect was eventually caught, but in the end, neither the children nor their bodies were ever found. In the first game, the restaurant is actually set to be shut down later in the year; complaints to the Health Department about blood and mucus leaking from the suits, as well as a horrid odor, are allegedly the cause.
- Furthermore, business had been bad, and the management could not find a buyer for the pizzeria since no one cared to be associated with the name, giving them no other choice but to close the place down.
- Due to the incidents, the restaurant had been unable to earn a substantial amount of revenue.
- This resulted in the implementation of a power budget at night.
It is also for these reasons that the establishment was forced to close down at the end of the year.
